BRUNSWICK — A Cairo man is believed to have shot two people, killing one and critically injuring the other, before taking his own life Saturday.

Joel Chris Blankenship of Cairo allegedly shot Andrew J. Worsham of Jesup at his home that morning, according to Glynn County police. Blankenship, 28, was found dead in a wooded area, along with 25-year-old Dara Jo Wasdin of Screven, who was mortally wounded.

Both Blankenship and Wasdin received gunshots to the head. Wasdin was alive when police discovered the two and taken to Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center, where she died Sunday. Worsham, 38, was shot in the face and is now in critical condition at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

After an investigation, police believe Blankenship shot Worsham and Wasdin, then turned the gun on himself.

“We know that Ms. Wasdin and Mr. Blankenship knew each other, and that she also knew Mr. Worsham,” Glynn County Police Lt. Ted McDonald said. “This was not a random shooting.”

Worsham’s roommate, Robert Trek Smith, said Blankenship and Wasdin were at his home on the morning of the murders. He said they were arguing in the back of the house at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Later that morning, he heard Blankenship’s voice, then a gunshot. When got up to investigate, the two were gone, and Worsham had been shot.

While searching for the pair, police heard gunfire off U.S. Highway 341 in Glynn County.

“It was about 10:23 a.m. when our officers heard two gunshots being fired, and within minutes they had located two people,” McDonald said. There was a handgun recovered near the bodies, but it has yet to be determined if it is the murder weapon.
