On April 20, Schneider Electric and Thomasville City Schools invited students and staff to participate in their energy efficiency project through an Earth Day celebration.

The celebration included remarks by Thomasville City Schools Superintendent Sabrina Boykins-Everett and a tree planting. Through this fun and interactive activity, students were able to take part in the energy efficiency project and learn about how different behaviors can impact the environment.

Students at Scott Elementary School participated by holding a tree planting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. The new tree was planted on campus as a symbol to inspire Thomasville City Schools’ students.

“It is extremely important that we incorporate into our instruction a sense of global responsibility within our students,” Boykins-Everett said. “Even as adults, we often take the world in which we live for granted. Those who pay attention know that many of our earthly resources are in jeopardy due to abuse, neglect, and an apathetic mindset regarding our being responsible consumers on this earth. Activities such as the tree planting at Scott Elementary provided a hands on experience for our students to learn about ways they can be a part of making their environment a better place to live. Some of these same children will return to this spot one day to show their own children the tree they planted when they were students at Scott School. How awesome is that?”

Thomasville City Schools partnered with Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation, on an energy savings performance contract (ESPC) that will save nearly $150,000 in annual energy expenses or $4 million over the life of the project. The project installation will be completed later this year and is expected to reduce the district’s utility budget by 23 percent.

The project also will have a sizable environmental impact. Once completed, the project will provide energy efficiency savings equivalent to removing 221 cars from the road, powering 111 houses or removing 1,049 tons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
