MOULTRIE, Ga. —As students returned from spring break this week, parents remained concerned about a pair of fights at Colquitt County High School the last two days before the vacation.

School Superintendent Doug Howell said he understands the magnitude of this situation, and he has already had conversations with Principal Jamie Dixon, Assistant Principal Chad Horne, school resource officer Todd Myrick and Sheriff Rod Howell discussing the current procedures and discipline issues.

“This is my statement: Fighting will not be tolerated and it is not acceptable in our system,”  said Howell. “Any more fights that happen in our system will be handled the same way, and that’s the message we want to send. Students that choose to fight will be suspended, sent to a hearing officer and they will be charged by the sheriff’s department. We met and we are all on the same page with this, and we are not going to tolerate it any more.”

Howell said students involved in the fights almost two weeks ago went through that exact process: suspended by the school, sent to a disciplinary hearing before the system hearing officer and charged by the sheriff’s department.

Howell said there is no need to change any rules at the moment but didn’t rule out the possibility in the future.

“We will continue to look at our protocol and look at our plans, but you just don’t change a rule or anything right at the moment. Those are things that need to be thought out,” said Howell. “But we aren’t looking to change anything, not at this time, but we are concerned about is what is going on right now.”

As of Thursday there have been no fights or other issues at the high school since students returned, Howell said.
