Stormy weather arriving

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Potentially heavy thunderstorms are expected in South Georgia this week with a potential for damaging winds and flooding, according to forecasters. A cold front stalled across north Georgia is the main culprit, said Jordan Root, a meteorologist with the private forecasting service AccuWeather. Enhanced sea breeze activity will also come into play, said Joseph Patton of the National Weather Service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office. “(Thunderstorms) are going to be a widespread issue” through the region, he said. While there is a low probability for tornadoes, AccuWeather is more concerned about gusty straight-line winds, possibly in excess of 60 miles per hour and flash flooding, Root said. The weather service gives Valdosta daytime thunderstorm chances from 60 to 80 percent through Wednesday; Root said the heaviest storms could come that day as the north Georgia cold front dislodges itself and heads south. Valdosta is running a rainfall deficit for the year, Root said, with the 14.77 inches measured at Valdosta Regional Airport falling about three inches short of normal. South Georgia could see from one to three inches of rain, with five to six inches possible in isolated spots, he said. The storms will also have a mild cooling effect on the region, Root said, lowering highs from near 90 early in the week to below-normal low 80s. Overnight lows should drop from near 70 Monday night to the upper 50s Thursday night, according to the weather service.
