Gas prices rise

VALDOSTA, Ga.  — Lowndes County rang in the new year Sunday with higher gas prices. The average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline in Valdosta Sunday was $2.20, up four cents from a week earlier, according to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report. The highest price for gasoline in the city Sunday was $2.84 at a North Patterson Street store, while the lowest price was $2.08 at a retailer on West Hill Avenue, according to the price tracking website gas buddy.com.

No businesses in Valdosta were selling gasoline Sunday for less than $2 a gallon, according to gasbuddy, Nationally, Sunday’s average fuel price was $2.34, up five cents from seven days earlier, while Georgia’s average price of $2.25 was up seven cents from the previous week, according to the auto club. In Friday’s market action, benchmark U.S. crude fell 5 cents to close at $53.72 a barrel in New York. That translates into a 45 percent gain for the year. Brent crude, used to price international oils, slipped 3 cents to close at $56.82 a barrel in London.

 

 

Thief makes off with half-ton of pecans

MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Tuesday night break-in at a Moultrie business netted the thief about a half-ton of pecans. Lastinger’s, 320 E. Central Ave., reported on Wednesday morning finding a roll-up door bent and pulled out about a foot. A tub that held 900 to 1,000 pounds of pecans was empty. The pecans, owned by Covington Pecan in Opp, Ala., were valued at $1,500.

 

HCHS students fundraising for Inauguration trip

JASPER, Fla. —Hamilton County High School student government officers will attend the 58th Presidential Inauguration.

The inauguration of 45th President Donald Trump will be Jan. 20.

Student Government sponsor Horacio Perez said the desire for the trip was not was not birthed out of political preference, but out of desire to witness such a historical event and to give students an experience of a lifetime.

Fifteen students, grades 8-12, will be attending the event, along with five chaperones.

The students have been planning and fundraising since September. 

The trip will be three days and the students are currently $3,000 shy of the needed funds.
