Flooding expected around Suwannee, Santa Fe rivers

LIVE OAK, Fla. — Minor flooding is expected from the Suwannee River later this week and into next week, while there is projected to be moderate flooding from the Santa Fe River.

According to Sheriff Sam St. John, Suwannee County’s emergency management director, the Suwannee River is projected to crest Monday at 27 feet at Ivey Park in Branford. The flood stage in Branford is 25 feet.

The river is projected to crest at 37 feet Monday at Luraville where the flood stage is 35 feet.

“It’s what they consider minor flooding,” St. John said. “It doesn’t look too bad unless we get a lot more rain.”

With the minor flooding predicted, St. John said there likely will be some road closures close to the river but he doesn’t expect any houses to be flooded.

The river is not projected to reach flood stage in Dowling Park, Ellaville, Suwannee Springs or White Springs.

The Santa Fe River at Three Rivers Estates has already surpassed flood stage at 17 feet. It was at 18.25 feet Tuesday morning and is expected to reach moderate flooding Friday. On Monday, the Santa Fe is projected to be at 23.8 feet at Three Rivers Estates, just below the major flood level of 24 feet.

The Santa Fe near Hildreth is also projected to reach 23.8 feet on Monday, just below the moderate flood level there. It is expected to surpass the flood stage of 20 feet on Thursday.
