The fatal house fire Tuesday night was fully involved by the time Suwannee County Fire Rescue crews arrived.

WELLBORN, Fla. — A 1-year-old died in a house fire in Wellborn on Tuesday night.

Suwannee County Fire Rescue crews responded to a house fire on Hogan Road around 10:30 p.m. and arrived to a single-story structure fully involved.

Public Safety Director James Sommers said the house was probably 100 years old, an “old lighter house.”

Sommers said crews were told the child was in the house and a search was performed after the fire was extinguished.

“There was nothing anybody could do at that point, when we got there,” Sommers said. “The fire was too far involved.”

Other family members, which included grandparents and the child’s mother, escaped the fire without injury.

SCFR stations 1, 2, 5 and 51 responded to the fire.

The fire and fatality are under investigation by the state fire marshal.
