New offensive wrinkles help Suwannee top Florida High in spring game
LIVE OAK, Fla. — Suwannee wrapped up the spring on a high note with a 10-7 win against Florida High on Friday.
With spring football comes a lot of experimenting, and the new wrinkles the Bulldogs threw in on offense worked well. Despite scoring just 10 points, SHS gained 211 yards in three quarters of varsity action. Suwannee showed a new look as it ran a no-huddle offense most of the night.
The Bulldogs also went with many different formations and took advantage of the versatility of quarterbacks Jaquez Moore and Tyree Taylor.
Moore and Taylor lined up at QB, wide receiver and running back. Moore went 6 of 10 passing for 43 yards to go along with two receptions. Taylor was 3 of 4 for 46 yards. He had four receptions for 32 yards.
Moore, Taylor, Carlton Hall (13 rushes, 110 yards, one touchdown) and a strong defensive showing played a big part in the win.
“A great way to finish up a productive spring,” said SHS coach Kyler Hall. “Saw some good on offense and defense.
“There were some struggles we had to fight through; we missed some opportunities to score and had some missed tackles, which you expect in the spring. Anytime you go against somebody else you want to win. To hold these guys to seven points is pretty good.”
The biggest takeaway for Kyler Hall was his team’s ability to come back after falling behind.
Florida High’s Willie Taggart Jr., who split time at quarterback with Bryson Hill, led the Seminoles down the field in the third quarter for a 90-yard touchdown drive and the first points of the game. Taggart ran for 36 yards on the six-minute drive and then capped it off with an 8-yard touchdown pass to give Florida High a 7-0 lead.
After the score, Suwannee came right back to tie the game. Taylor got things started with a few nice runs to begin the possession. And then on the first play of the fourth quarter, Hall broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run.
“Carlton Hall was patient all night. A little crease and he hit it. He’s a very special back,” said Kyler Hall. “One of the biggest things I saw was after we gave up the touchdown, those guys responded.”
On the Bulldogs’ next drive, Taylor connected with the speedy Jaquary Pratt on a 37-yard pass down the left sideline to set up an excellent scoring opportunity. Rising sophomore Ryan LeNeave, a three-sport athlete playing football for the first time, then came on to kick a 33-yard field goal to give SHS a 10-7 edge.
Down by three, the Seminoles were left with one final chance on offense with two minutes remaining. Suave White sealed the game for Suwannee with a tackle along the sidelines on a fourth-down play to keep Florida High short of a first down.
