Mid-morning collision blocks 319 for hours

BEACHTON — Traffic along Highway 319 was blocked off for hours Wednesday following a two-vehicle collision that involved a leaking propane truck.

The Georgia State Patrol received a call at 10:27 a.m. that an AmeriGas propane truck driven by James Wilson had overturned after it collided with a farm tractor driven by Joseph Walden. The truck then began leaking propane.

An official with AmeriGas told law enforcement that all the propane had to leak out before the scene could be safely accessed, according to the GSP. Emptying the truck’s entire propane tank was estimated to take between two to three hours.

First responders blocked off both lanes of the highway as they waited for the go-ahead to access the site of the accident. The Department of Transportation organized detours for motorists.

A drone provided by Thomas County was used to survey the site to determine if the scene of the accident was safe to access.

Wilson, 51, was headed south on 319 when the collision occurred near Walden Road within Grady County.

Both drivers were transported to Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville with minor injuries. Wilson was later discharged, but Walden, 70, remained at the hospital Wednesday night.

Sgt. Russ Covington with GSP said charges may be pending in the case, but troopers have not been able to investigate the scene.

The highway reopened to traffic this afternoon.
