Bobby E. Parham Bridge undergoing rehab

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The Bobby E. Parham Bridge over the Oconee River in Milledgeville is undergoing extensive rehabilitation work.

The project, which has been ongoing for the past several weeks, will continue until late February or March.

A portion of the $2.1 million funds is also being used for bridge repairs on Ga. Route 22 near Roberson Mill Road in Milledgeville as well as the bridge overpass on Interstate 20 in McDuffie County near Thomson.

“The contractor has been working around the clock the last few weeks to get the area complete,” according to Kyle B. Collins, a spokesman with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

Collins said the double-lane closures that had been in place are no longer in place.

“Right now they are working through the end of the day to complete the sidewalk on the westbound side,” Collins said. “There is about 100 feet left to do.”

Officials involved with the bridge rehabilitation project have indicated that sort of work will continue now through early next week.

Bridgework is not being done Friday through Sunday.

“Any additional closures at the Bobby Parham Bridge will just be single-lanes in the coming weeks,” Collins said.

The GDOT spokesman said the bridge maintenance project is being done to strengthen the existing structure and to ensure that it stands up well for many years to come.

Collins said bridge repairs include structure caps and columns, bridge deck repair and bridge polymer overlay.

“There is an application window for the latex polymer overlay and rock to go down on the deck,” Collins said. “The contractor has to wait until late February or March to get this done. They also must seal the bridge joints in conjunction with this activity.”

The rehabilitation work on the bridge is being done by Massana Construction Inc.
