Brookwood boys top Deerfield-Windsor

ALBANY — The Brookwood Warriors went on the road Tuesday night and improved to 2-0 in GISA 3-AAA Region play with a 45-43 win over Deerfield-Windsor in Albany.

The Warriors took the lead mid-fourth quarter on a Sam Barrett putback to make it 36-35. Deerfield responded with a Zai Drye 3-pointer to go up 38-36, but Harrison Owens put Brookwood back in front with consecutive finishes at the rim for a 40-38 lead.

A Kelton Lewis mid-range jumper extended the Warrior lead to 43-39 with 3 minutes to play. Deerfield hit another 3-pointer, this time by Smith Flynn, to pull within one. Barrett responded with a cutting layup, assisted by Owens, to give the Warriors a 45-42 lead.

A controversial call at the final buzzer put Deerfield’s Andrew Sceals at the free-throw line for three foul shots with the potential to tie the game. After Sceals made the first but missed the second, the Warriors held on for the 45-43 final. Lewis led with 11 points, Barrett finished with nine, and Owens and Jacob Hilson each scored eight.

In girls action, the Lady Warriors fell 57-42 to the Lady Knights. After leading much of the first half, Brookwood was forced into too many turnovers by the Lady Knights pressure defense. The loss drops Brookwood to 1-1 in region play.

The teams will travel to Valwood on Thursday for another region road set.
