THOMASVILLE – Records were meant to be broken. For a pair of Thomasville senior soccer players, that means the goals and assist records will be broken for the second straight year.
Andrew Geyer had already broken his goals record from last year, while Matthew Lewis was on the verge of breaking the assists record entering Tuesday night’s game against the Cairo Syrupmakers.
“The impressive thing about both of them is their goals and assists are through the roof,” Thomasville boys soccer coach Robert Peterson said. “They’ve both been very, very impressive. They work so well together. They make everybody else around them better.”
Entering Tuesday’s game with the Syrupmakers, Geyer had scored 40 goals, one more than last year’s record of 39 to go along with 25 assists. Lewis had already dished out 31 assists and scored 30 goals himself.
“(Andrew) had the record last year and broke it again this year with several games left. And on top of that, Matthew Lewis had the assist record last year and he’s probably going to break it in the next game or two,” said Peterson before Tuesday’s game. “If you look at it this year, (Andrew) had one less game to do it because of all the cancellations and rainouts. For various reasons, he’s only going to end up with 17 total games, and he had 18 last year. He’s going to do it in one less game which makes it all the more impressive.”
Thomasville’s offensive leaders were key reasons the Bulldogs started 12-1-1, scored 85 goals and are undefeated in Region 1-AA heading into Wednesday’s match with the Cook Hornets. The two were part of the Bulldogs’ state championship squad as freshmen. They’re primed to do it again breaking records along the way.
“Their numbers are impressive,” Peterson said. “Having already won a state championship as freshmen to now where they’re breaking records, they’ve been pretty special.”
