Burgess takes second, Pettis third at state wrestling

MACON — Thomas County Central had two state placers — both in the top three — at the GHSA Class AAAAA state wrestling traditionals, held at the Macon Centreplex.
David Burgess took home a runner-up in the 106-pound class, and Amari Pettis took third at 220 pounds.
Burgess pinned Logan Gould of Whitewater and then Colton Thompson of Paulding County. His pin of Titan Carr of Johnson-Gainesville put him in the final match against Buford’s Nick Corday. Corday won by technical fall.
Pettis beat Shamar Padgett of South Effingham 10-3 in the consolation finals to clam third place. Pettis opened the tournament with a 5-0 win over Whitewater’s Leo Barranco. and edged Carrollton’s Brock Bibbee 3-1.
Evan Dimaggio of Buford scored on an escape in the third period of overtime to take a 3-2 win over Pettis in the semifinals.
