THOMASVILLE — On Tuesday night the Thomasville YMCA began their first ever 3v3 indoor soccer season. 14 teams will battle it out all summer at the Everett-Milton YMCA.
“So far for our inaugural season it’s been really successful,” said Thomasville YMCA marketing and development director Katie Ketchum.
This 3v3 soccer league features many teams in several different age groups. The youth of Thomasville can play in Under 10, Under 12, and Under 14 competition. The league is designed to fill the summer gap in local athletics. Without this league, many of the kids in Thomasville would have no way to play organized soccer.
“That’s one of the things we do here at the Thomasville YMCA,” said Ketchum. “We are always trying to fill gaps within the community.”
One of the reasons for the 3v3 structure of the league is so that the YMCA can get as many teams as possible. Teams are only allowed a max of six players on their roster, allowing the league to have more teams and be more competitive.
In addition 3v3 soccer allows the kids to play the game at a faster pace, something many them have already been doing. 3v3 soccer is very popular in the summer months as competition spreads across the nation. It’s no different in Thomasville, as 3v3 soccer offers players a chance to get back to the basics.
“3v3 is rudimentary,” Ketchum said. “It’s like going back to the triangle. Almost everything in soccer, even if you get up to 11v11, is still the triangle and making moves and passes. So, we felt like it was just a good and easy transition.”
Games will be played on the basketball court at the Everett-Milton on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Matches will begin at 5:30 and will be played in 30 minute intervals until 8:30. The season will culminate in the playoffs which are slated for July 18 and 20.
