Priest: Loss of family of four in crash before funeral devastating

(RNN) – Four family members living in the U.S. were on the way to a funeral when they were killed in a crash just hours after arriving in Ireland.

A couple in their 70s and their two grown sons in their 40s died when the car in which they were riding collided with a tractor-trailer at around 6.30 p.m. Monday, the Irish Independent reported.

The Irish Post said all four family members died at the scene. The truck driver was treated at the scene for severe shock.

The family hasn’t been identified.

The couple, believed to be Illinois residents, were on their way from Shannon to County Wexford to attend the funeral of Winnie Keevey on Tuesday. The woman who died in the accident is thought to be the sister of Keevey, the Irish Post reported.

The crash occurred just down the road from Church of St. Mary in Cushinstown, the church where the funeral was held on Tuesday.

“For us, it’s going to be a time of mourning and sadness right up into Christmas,” Father John Devereux said, and said the community has been extending their thoughts and prayers to the Keevey family.
