Moultrie man charged in drug bust

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Police parlayed a tip of drug sales at a Beatty Road residence into the seizure of suspected crystal meth, ecstasy, marijuana, guns and prescription medication, and made one arrest.

Agents with the Colquitt County Drug Enforcement Team searched Stevie Gomez’s car and residence after seeing Gomez, whom they knew was unlicensed, driving the vehicle.

“We got a complaint about a week ago from an anonymous tipster that said Mr. Gomez was selling crystal meth and also selling marijuana,” said Inv. Randy Rakestraw, an investigator with the agency. “At about 10:55 a.m. Wednesday the Colquitt County Drug Enforcement Team observed him driving in the neighborhood (near) his residence.”

Officers pulled up to talk with Gomez just after he turned into the driveway of his 298 Beatty Road residence, police said.

“We told him we had gotten calls about him being involved in drug distribution,” Rakestraw said. “We asked for permission to check him for drugs.”

Gomez told police he “didn’t have too much on him” and allowed officers to search him, he said. During that initial search police found clear bag containing what appeared to be prescription pills in the front pocket of his hoodie jacket. They also found about four grams of suspected methamphetamine in a clear bag in his pants pocket and digital scales.

As Rakestraw opened the driver’s door to speak with a passenger in the car a bag containing about 26 grams of suspected marijuana was on the interior door handle. Officers also found a hidden compartment inside the car’s glove box where there was a small amount of suspected marijuana and crystal meth as well as a pipe.

Police detained Gomez and asked for permission to search the residence, which Gomez granted, Rakestraw said.

Inside the residence officers found on a table and in the living room area more digital scales, a bag of suspected ecstasy pills and a loaded Kel-Tec 9 mm pistol, he said. Inside Gomez’s bedroom they found a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and a sawed-off bolt action .22-caliber rifle whose serial number had been filed off.

As a result of the investigation, police charged Gomez, 39, with felony charges of possession of ecstasy, possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of firearms, criminal use of an article with an altered identification mark, violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act in connection with possession of alprazolam (Xanax), and two counts possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He also was charged with driving without license, misdemeanor marijuana possession and possession of drug-related objects.

“The passenger was identified and released,” and was not charged, Rakestraw said.
