City schools getting new lunch rooms

VALDOSTA — W.G. Nunn Elementary School and Valdosta Early College Academy cafeterias are getting face lifts.

Pam Boyd presented the design plans and bid costs to the Valdosta City Schools Board of Education Tuesday evening to be approved so renovations can begin when summer break starts.

“I want to get them renovated this summer, which is coming up,” Boyd said.

The W.G. Nunn project will cost $118,502, while the VECA lunch room will cost $78,963. Norvell Fixture & Equipment, out of Grovetown, won the bid because it was the lowest.

Valdosta City Schools Superintendent Dr. Todd Cason reminded board members that federal nutrition program funds will pay for the projects instead of the school system’s general funds.

The style of W.G. Nunn’s cafeteria will look similar to other city elementary school lunch rooms, and the project will include a cafeteria renovation, new serving lines and a new kitchen.

For VECA, the project will only focus on a new cafeteria.

Boyd said serving lines and kitchen at VECA are fairly new, so she doesn’t see the need to renovate them. The cafeteria and dishwashing area will be updated.

The board approved the projects to begin this summer by Norwell. Both projects should be complete by the end of June, Boyd said.
