Benton, Jackets blank Berrien
THOMASVILLE — Luke Benton held Berrien to two hits, and the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets posted a 5-0 victory over the visiting Rebels on Tuesday.
Benton went the distance, walking three and striking out five. Berrien had runners on third base with two outs three times, including the top of the seventh, but Benton got out of each jam. He had runners on first and second with no outs in the third but then struck out the side. That started a run of 12 straight batters Benton retired before a leadoff single in the seventh.
The Yellow Jackets struck for four runs in the bottom of the third, with Nick Herndon’s triple bringing in two runs. Herndon later stole home for the inning’s final run.
Zach Fletcher had a run-scoring single, and Slade Taylor also had a sacrifice fly.
Fletcher and R.J. Delaney each went 2-for-3 with a double, and Jarrod Johnson added a double.
The Yellow Jackets, 23-4, will host Thomasville on Friday at 7 p.m.
