Woman charged with impersonating police officer
A Thomas County Sheriff’s Office deputy was trying to save a motorist a towing bill when he was encountered by a woman who said she was a Thomasville Police Department officer.
In a Saturday night traffic stop on Oak Hill Road, the deputy learned the driver’s license was suspended, said Capt. Tim Watkins, sheriff’s office chief investigator.
The officer told the driver to contact someone with a valid driver’s license who could come get the vehicle.
When a woman arrived to get the vehicle, the deputy asked for her driver’s license to be sure it was valid.
An incident report states the woman, Kelsey Monique Kenon, 27, 2015 E. Pinetree Blvd., insisted there was no reason to check her license, said she knew policy and was a TPD officer.
According to the report, Kenon talked on a cell phone during the incident and told the deputy she spoke with a police captain.
“The Thomasville Police Department does not have any captains,” Watkins said.
The deputy contacted the officer Kenon referred to as a captain. The officer, who went to the Oak Hill Road scene, confirmed Kenon was not a police department employee.
Watkins said Kenon is employed by the Georgia Department of Corrections, but does not have arrest powers and is not a certified law enforcement officer.
Kenon is charged with impersonating a public officer or employee.
“All she had to do was show the officer her driver’s license and get it verified, but she decided to be an officer instead,” Watkins said. “The deputy was trying to save a wrecker bill.”
