GMC Prep basketball splits with Greene County

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The Lady Dogs of GMC Prep continued their winning ways while the boys’ squad was humbled in the teams’ trip to Greensboro to face Greene County on Tuesday. The girls won a close one by a final score of 41-39 while the boys’ fell to the previously winless Tigers 70-55.

The Lady Dogs (2-3) got off to a hot start and only gave up two points in the second quarter to take a 22-11 lead into the break. The still winless Lady Tigers began to creep their way back into the ballgame in the second half though thanks to some missed scoring opportunities and struggles at the free throw line from GMC Prep. Greene County had the ball down just two points with only four seconds left in the fourth quarter, but “a tough defensive stand” according to Lady Dogs’ head coach Shawn Dennis allowed his team to leave Greensboro with its second win.

GMC Prep had three girls score in double digits led by Kate McGhee and Kennedy Davis who each had 11 points in the victory.

The boys’ team took a step backwards Tuesday after getting their first win of the young season last Saturday against Stratford. A hungry, previously winless Greene County squad came out with a high-pressure defense that forced the Bulldogs into a lot of early turnovers. The Tigers parlayed those mistakes into a 23-11 first quarter lead from which GMC Prep could not recover.

“We just never could get going,” said head coach James Lunsford. “Our youth showed up a lot. We just didn’t handle pressure well and played like sophomores. For the most part the guys played hard, but they just didn’t play smart.”

GMC Prep was led in scoring by sophomores Malik Foston and Josh Walker who each had 14 points in the loss. Jalen Milner went 6-for-11 from the floor and contributed 13 points.

The GMC Prep basketball teams will be back in action tonight in the Cordell Events Center to take on visiting Washington-Wilkes. Tip for the girls’ game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the boys’ contest to follow.
