Country stars’ talented kids are following in famous parents’ boot steps
The idea of children following in their parents’ footsteps is nothing notable, except when the footsteps are boot heels and the family business is performing for thousands of adoring fans.
Heredity is not a guarantee of success for an aspiring country artist with a famous parent, but natural talent and growing up surrounded by music and ready access to some of the most creative people in the industry has its advantages for progeny with pipes.
Examples of country artists who have succeeded on the boot heels of their parents include Rosanne Cash, Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, and more recently Thomas Rhett. But there is a whole generation of aspiring artists waiting in the wings.
Reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year Garth Brooks’ daughter Allie Colleen sang background vocals for her dad at his sold-out July 28 Los Angeles concert. Brooks kept her onstage appearance low-key until he was introducing his band. That’s when an emotional Brooks asked the audience to help him serenade Allie Colleen for her 21st birthday. But she’s no stranger to the stage. Allie Colleen has been playing shows around Nashville and posting performances to her Facebook page.
On Aug. 4, Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts introduced his 16-year-old daughter, Brittany, to fans at the band’s show in Battle Creek, Mich. Father and daughter performed a duet of the emotionally-charged Flatts hit “I Won’t Let Go,” which culminated in a huge hug between them at the end. The obviously proud papa recently Tweeted about his daughter’s vocals, which are featured on a new album by Christian artist Jamie Grace.
Sara Evans is another proud parent. Her 14-year-old daughter, Olivia, made her TV debut on “Live with Kelly and Ryan” July 25, singing behind her famous mom. After the performance of Evans’ current single, “Marquee Sign,” she took to Instagram to express her joy at the special mother/daughter moment.
Evans says she put Olivia on the spot when she asked her to sing on the recorded version of “Marquee Sign” with no preparation, but the talented teen rose to the occasion. “I didn’t guide her at all,” Sara told Rare Country. “It turned out amazing. So now we’re putting her in the live show. She’s doing the encore every night.”
Evans knows the ups and downs of the music industry, so for now, she is happy keeping Oliva close and letting her experience the business in manageable pieces. “I’m going to definitely encourage her to stay a child,” Evans said. “There’s plenty of time for her to really make [music] her whole life. But we are gradually kind of getting the word out there and letting people know about her.”
There plenty more examples of country music’s blossoming family tree. Lee Ann Womack’s daughter, Aubrey Sellers, is already garnering critical attention for her debut album. Glen Campbell’s daughter, Ashley, released a song to country radio in 2015. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s daughter, Audrey, has performed onstage with her dad at Nashville’s Bridgestone arena. Travis Tritt also appears be grooming his daughter, Tyler Reese, for a music career. And when Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill was asked to sing the national anthem at a Nashville Predators Stanley Cup Playoff game earlier this year, he was joined in the performance by both of his daughters, Jenny and Corrina. Jenny just released her debut EP in February.
In the words of one of the most well-known musical offspring, Hank Williams Jr., they are all just following a “Family Tradition.”
