Report: Man was ‘ready to go’ before shooting ex-girlfriend

DALTON, Ga. — After busting through a kitchen door and arguing with Heather Griffin, Bertram Beck stated he was “ready to go,” pointed a pistol at his former girlfriend and then shot her, according to an incident report.

Beck shot Griffin in her right arm and abdomen on Friday night at 1025 Prince Way in Whitfield County. Beck was arrested Tuesday night by the Cobb County Police Department in Smyrna near the intersection of South Cobb Drive and I-285 and charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and giving false information to law enforcement. Smyrna is about 80 mile south of Dalton, just north of Atlanta.

Lt. Paul Woods with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office said he is working with authorities in Cobb County and said Beck, 44, will be returned to Whitfield County to face charges of aggravated assault and first degree home invasion. Woods said other charges could be pending.

According to a warrant sworn for Beck’s arrest in Cobb County, Beck was found with five grams of marijuana and twice gave law officers a false name and false date of birth.

Woods said he didn’t know exactly how Cobb County authorities came into contact with Beck, but said they were acting on a tip Whitfield County authorities gave them on Beck’s whereabouts.

“They were able to make contact with him from the information we provided them,” Woods said.

The capture

According to an incident report provided by the Cobb County Police Department on Beck’s arrest, officers were sent to the RaceTrac gas station at 5191 S. Cobb Drive in Smyrna near where the street intersects with I-285 after receiving a tip from Whitfield County that Beck could possibly be there. One of the officers wrote he obtained Beck’s drivers license photograph en route to the location.

As officers gathered at the store at about 6:25 p.m., a person matching Beck’s description was spotted walking northbound on South Cobb Drive.

When officers approached, Beck changed directions and cut through a gap in the trees along the road. Two officers approached Beck with their guns drawn — “due to the serious nature of the charges pending against Beck and the high probability he was still in possession of the gun used in the crime,” according to the report — and ordered Beck to stop and raise his hands. The report said Beck did and when an officer asked him his name, he told the police his name Jesus. When other officers arrived, Beck was handcuffed. The report noted that Beck had shaved his beard and cut his hair to change his appearance.

While police questioned him, the report says Beck gave officers two sets of false names and dates of birth. He first told police his name was Jesus Johnson with a date of birth of Oct. 3, 1963. He then said his name was Alfred Phillips and was born on June 19, 1958. Another officer arrived with a rapid identification device, took Beck’s fingerprints and confirmed his identity.

In addition to the marijuana found on Beck during a pat down by officers, they also found a bottle of Fireball whiskey. He was not armed.

The shooting

Witnesses to Friday night’s shooting told sheriff’s office deputies Beck busted through the window on the door to the kitchen and began arguing with Griffin, according to a sheriff’s office incident report. The window was found broken out of the door frame and sitting in the kitchen floor. Griffin, 42, was also in the floor with gunshot wounds when deputies arrived. One of the people in the home had already applied a mock tourniquet to Griffin’s arm. A deputy gave her a pressure dressing to help control the bleeding on her stomach.

One of the witnesses in the report said while arguing, Beck said he “was ready to go” and was pointing the gun at Griffin. Then, he shot her and she fell to the floor. One witness said she ran towards Beck, who hit her in the back of her head with the pistol. Beck then ran out of the garage door.

A neighbor said he saw Beck park a white Toyota Camry a couple of houses down from the home and later saw the car leave. The Camry was discovered abandoned on Saturday on Evans Place in Dalton.

Whitfield County authorities have said that Griffin is the estranged girlfriend of Beck. Woods said the two had lived together in the past, and Beck was listed as residing on Prince Way when he was arrested on domestic violence charges related to Griffin in February. Beck was charged with aggravated assault, battery and cruelty to an animal in that case and was released on a $5,000 bond. The case is still pending in Whitfield County Superior Court.
