Manna Drop brings Thanksgiving home
TIFTON, Ga. — If it’s Thanksgiving, it’s time for the Manna Drop.
The Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College-based non-profit organization is planning its seventh annual event where they hand out bags of groceries to help get families the materials needed for their Thanksgiving dinner.
The organization started out as a club at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) when students on campus wanted to find a way to help families in need in the local area. After five successful food drives, the campus club became a verified non-profit.
The Manna Drop Organization has prepared 400 bags to be handed out. This year’s event will take place Nov. 23 at Charles Spencer Elementary School and the gates will open at 9:30 a.m. for community members to either drive through or walk up to receive their bag.
According to event organizer Cheyenne Colson, the successful food drives are only able to happen because of community sponsors like Publix.
Publix has been the main sponsor for the Manna Drop each year. For every Manna Drop, Publix has donated hams and money to make sure families in the area do not go hungry during Thanksgiving.
“Publix has been a huge help to us every year,” said Colson. “Without our sponsors and donors, we wouldn’t be able to take on this community project that has been very important to the students who participate in this event every year.”
The organization will continue to hand out bags of food until supplies run out. Once all bags have been handed out, the Manna Drop Organization will begin closing the gates.
Colson recommends that people interested in receiving a bag of groceries line up outside of Charles Spencer early. Cars have been reported to start lining up several hours ahead of time at previous Manna Drop food drives.
