Stallion baseball recruiting efforts successful

TIFTON — The college baseball season ended in the playoffs for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, but the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association champions are not resting on their laurels. Head coach Brandon Reeder has been busy recruiting and reloading his roster.

The offseason has been fruitful for Reeder as a number of players have signed on with the Stallions.

Many of the newcomers are pitchers.

“A lot coming in on the mound,” he said.

Among these hurlers are Ethan Phillips (formerly of Colquitt County), Braxton Wall (Yulee, Fla.), Brandon Dumas (Ridgeview, Fla.), Tanner Bryant (Pierce County), Patrick Reed (Gordon State/Tift County), Beau Dalton (Augusta University/Colquitt County), Trey Thompson (Frederica Academy) and Waggener Davidson (Northside of Columbus).

Dumas, said Reeder, has a ton of potential. Out of Orange Park-based Ridgeview, Dumas was one of his team’s Silver Slugger winners and was also team Most Valuable Player.

Reed and Dalton are transfers. Reed signed with Gordon State in April 2017. Dalton is two years out of Colquitt County, but was redshirted for medical reasons at Augusta State for one season.

Reeder said Dalton will be “a really good fit” with the program. Dalton will join former teammate Phillips at ABAC. Phillips’ high school career includes a no-hitter in the 2017 state tournament.

Thompson is another name potentially familiar to area fans. He played for Frederica and pitched his way to a win over Tiftarea Academy in the 2018 GISA Class AAA semifinals.

“He’s a very good pitcher,” said Reeder. “Coaches couldn’t say enough about him.”

More former teammates will be reunited with the signing of Dawson Searcey. A Lanier County High graduate, Searcey joins fellow alums Matthew White and Walker Bass.

Two players are coming in from Valdosta High, Dustin Doscher and Kody Noviello. Both can play infield with Doscher additionally a catcher. Bryant is one of two Pierce County Bears coming to Tifton, the other being infielder Ben Tuten.

Davidson was a late signee and a pitcher who “commands the zone,” according to Reeder.

Reeder was also highly complimentary of Jose Falcon, who signed with ABAC out of Avant Garde Academy in Orlando, Fla. He described Falcon as a power hitter with “a ton of potential.”

Another transfer to ABAC is Cary Campbell, who is coming over from Dyersburg State (Tenn.). Campbell, who spent his high school days at Salem High in Conyers, hit .264 at Dyersburg, was on base at a .473 clip and scored 22 runs and drove in five runs in limited at-bats.

Campbell reminds Reeder of a 2018 sophomore — Isaiah Arnold.

“He has all the tools to play pro,” said Reeder of Campbell.

Arnold will be missed from this year’s lineup, as will players such as Joel Ellis, who came in strong and then, “got a ton better.” Reeder will also be losing Blake Howell, Stone Stephenson, Dalton Rentz, Doss Arnold, Cole Garrett, Mark Felton and Drew Martens.

The Stallions have an impressive crew returning. Besides Bass and White, Reeder has Alex VanDerStok, Austin Hittinger, Rudy Amaya, Salik Williams, Matthew Cuthrell and many others. Amaya was named first team All-Conference closer and Hittinger was named to the Gold Glove team. Arnold, White and Martens were named All-Tournament, White the MVP.
