Investigation continues into fiery crash that led to woman’s death
CHATSWORTH, Ga. — While at the scene of a fiery car crash Monday afternoon in Chatsworth, Murray County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Brian Ingle said he had a “helpless kind of feeling.”
As the car rested on its roof consumed by flames, there was nothing Ingle could do as Brittany Kendrick, 28, of Chatsworth, was trapped inside the car with injuries. She died Tuesday at Vanderbilt Burn Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Ingle said he and Sheriff Gary Langford were on the scene shortly after the accident and estimated Kendrick was in the car 10 to 15 minutes.
“Firefighters had to go through the back glass to make entry into the car,” Ingle said “They were there quick and were able to control the fire, but the damage was already done.”
Ingle said the car “hit a bank and turned upside down” before bursting into flames. The single-car crash happened at Ball Ground and McEntire roads near Highway 411 in south Murray County. The driver, David Brown, 26, also of Chatsworth, was injured.
“He was out the car when I arrived,” Ingle said. “Emergency workers were treating him.”
Several calls to the Georgia State Patrol, which is investigating the accident, were not immediately returned Wednesday. Ingle said the Georgia State Patrol had a reconstruction team at the scene on Wednesday.
Anita Grant, Kendrick’s mother, described her daughter as “very bubbly.”
“Everybody loved her. She was a wonderful person who didn’t meet a stranger,” Grant said.
Grant said Kendrick was living with her at the time of the accident. Grant’s oldest sister raised Kendrick. Grant’s older sister has custody of Kendrick’s 8-year-old daughter, Allie Kendrick.
Grant said family members were with Kendrick when she passed Tuesday. She said her prayers are with Brown.
“He tried very hard to get her out of the car,” Grant said. “He’s going through a lot right now.”
Grant said Brown and Kendrick had been dating a little over a year.
