In awareness of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, The students and staff at Thomasville Christian School recently participated in a week of Dress Down days, with funds being donated to a local family battling with childhood cancer.
“Because September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we, at the school chose a community member, some family in Thomasville, or the surrounding area, that is battling childhood cancer,” Jami Butler, the administrator at Thomasville Christian School, said. “We raise funds to support that family.”
Liam Halley, 4, has been receiving treatments in Jacksonville since his diagnosis, according to Butler. To support him and his family, she added, they would be raising funds throughout September and October alongside their Dress Down days.
“We wanted to support his family while he’s going through some treatments,” she said. “So, we take up offerings in our chapel services, we’ll go to chapel once a week in our school, so the offerings that are given during September and October will go to support his family, as well as the money that we raise, with our Dress Down days.”
These Dress Down days, as Butler said, give a chance for the students of Thomasville Christian School to express themselves outside of their usual uniformed attire.
“So, the students, normally wear uniforms and once in a while we have a special activity where they can wear, you know, something more fun,” Butler said. “For Dress Down, they pay a dollar per day to dress up with a theme.”
Throughout the week, Butler said they had fun themes like Western Day and Groovy Day, tying up the end of the week with a Gold Out Day on Friday, where the students wore gold in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness.
“There were five special days where the kids got to dress up and they had a grand time,” she said.
