Local children receive Bags of Blessings

LIVE OAK, Fla. — Bags of Blessings bless children with food to eat on the weekend.

Bags of Blessings was started by Carmen Frier and Yvonne Billups in January 2012.

More than 70 bags are donated to children at Suwannee Primary School and Suwannee Elementary School each week.

Every bag contains a loaf of bread, peanut butter, three puddings, three fruits, three packs of crackers and any additional items donated.

“Generally by the end of the year, we are doing 100 bags,” Billups said.

The bags are packed every Wednesday at Westwood Baptist Church at 5:30 p.m.

Billups said there are generally six to eight volunteers and it takes about an hour to pack the bags.

“It’s been a blessing,” Frier said. “The kids are truly thankful.”

Frier thanked the Florida Peanut Federation for donating peanut butter last year.

“It is a blessing to us to help and good to know we are helping the children,” Patricia Allen said.

Michael Cannon said he felt blessed to be able to help the children who are less fortunate.
