Milledgeville man shot to death

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A 22-year-old Milledgeville man arrested on charges related to a murder case in Baldwin County last year was himself shot to death early Thursday, local authorities say.

The public’s help is being sought to help authorities solve the crime.

As of early afternoon Thursday, authorities still had not made any arrests in the shooting death of 22-year-old Voisel Javon Renfro, according to Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Detective Capt. Brad King.

“We are conducting interviews and we have executed a search warrant,” King said. “We have done some canvassing of the neighborhood talking with people and we’ve spoken to some family members. We’re trying to learn about his whereabouts all day (Wednesday) and into the night and early morning hours of Thursday.”

The shooting is believed to have happened between 1:38 a.m. and 1:41 a.m.

Detectives were continuing to follow leads in the murder investigation Thursday afternoon.

King said the crime did not appear to be the result of a drive-by shooting.

“Right now at this point, and given what I know right now at this moment, I can’t really make a determination,” King said. “It certainly does not appear to have been a drive-by shooting. At this point, I’d have to say that it looks more like some type of domestic related incident or argument.”

King said detectives may have found the weapon used in the fatal shooting.

“We have recovered a weapon, but I will not go any further than that,” he said, noting detectives won’t know whether the gun was actually used in the shooting until it’s been sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Columbus and analyzed.

“We’ll be sending the gun off and then we’ll have to wait for the ballistics results,” he said.

Renfro, who reportedly lived with his grandmother on the 100 block of Robins Drive, died of a gunshot wound to the chest, King said.

Deputy Ashley Brown discovered Renfro laying face down on the ground in the yard between duplex apartments located at 132 and 134 Marion Street.

In an incident report, the deputy said he checked the victim for a pulse, but couldn’t find one.  He then called out to the victim, but got no response.

Brown said in his report that he later saw what he described as a small amount of blood on the ground, just to the right of the victim’s body. He also discovered a small bullet hole in the center of the victim’s chest.

The crime scene was guarded by Brown and Deputy Crystal Washington until Detectives Thomas “T.J.” Hargrove and Chuck Downing arrived to collect evidence and take photographs.

A witness who lives close to where the victim’s body was found told the deputy when he got there that he had been awakened by the sound of a gunshot and the sound of someone groaning outside the front of his residence.

He later called 911.

Deputy Washington said in the same report that she talked with another neighbor who heard a gunshot and went to his front door to see what had happened.

A witness told the deputy he saw a small dark-colored car speed away from the area shortly after he heard the gunfire. The car, make and model unknown, reportedly traveled south on Marion Street and made a left turn onto Randall Drive.

Baldwin County Chief Deputy Coroner Ken Garland pronounced Renfro dead at the scene.

An autopsy performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory in Macon determined the victim died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Renfro was one of the persons arrested last Sept. 2 on charges indirectly related to the shotgun slaying of 18-year-old Deandre Ricky Bolston at The Milledgeville Manor Apartments. Renfro was charged with giving false statements to law enforcement officers and tampering with evidence.

Renfro pleaded guilty to the charges Oct. 28 during a hearing before Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge E. Trenton Brown Jr. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and five years probation, according to jail and court records.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 478-445-5102.
