‘Extremely reckless’ shooting suspect behind bars
THOMASVILLE — A Grady County resident sought in a Monday night Thomasville shooting was captured late Tuesday afternoon after a pursuit that began in Grady County and ended in Thomasville.
Terry Terrell Willis, 30, 3261 Pine Park Road, Lot 1D, Cairo, fired a shot at a vehicle on Marshall Street on Monday night, according to authorities. The projectile struck a tire. The incident involved a personal vendetta, Capt. Maurice Holmes, Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division commander, said Wednesday morning.
“Unbeknownst to Mr. Willis, the victim’s 3-year-old child was in the vehicle, along with two females,” Holmes said. “The person he had a beef with was not in the vehicle.”
A Grady County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw Willis’ vehicle in Grady County about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and followed it into Thomas County. The officer attempted a traffic stop at U.S. 84 and Stewart Road.
The vehicle traveled onto the north bypass and into Thomasville, where city police and narcotics agents took over the chase from Grady County.
Louis Schofill, narcotics/vice chief, said the vehicle attempted to elude lawmen in the Campbell Street industrial area.
Once the vehicle was stopped, multiple bags of molly were found inside, authorities said.
Willis is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A warrant will be pursued charging him with cruelty to child because of the presence of the youngster in the car at which he fired shots.
Willis was out of jail on bond on a charge that he shot someone in the back in November 2015. The Tuesday arrest is his second bond-violation offense.
“Terry Willis is extremely reckless,” Holmes said.
Holmes said Suryiah Nicole Mathis, 28, Thomasville, and Rashawn Al’Jawun Brown, 32, 308 Wolf St., also are charged with aggravated assault in the Monday shooting. Mathis was driving the vehicle, Holmes said.
