Inmates assault officers at Suwannee Correctional Institution

LIVE OAK, Fla. — Two correctional officers were assaulted by inmates at Suwannee Correctional Institution Friday morning.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, inmate Brian Kirsch assaulted an officer at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The report states Kirsch stabbed the officer multiple times.

According to FDC, inmate Lawrence Johnson struck another officer in the face.

One officer was transported to an outside hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

According to FDC, Suwannee Correctional was placed on lockdown and both inmates will be transferred to a more restrictive housing unit.

Kirsch was sentenced in 2014 in Manatee County for two counts of robbery with a firearm or deadly weapon, two counts of false imprisonment and grand theft of a motor vehicle. His current release date is Aug. 13, 2037.

Johnson was sentenced in 2013 in Duval County for possession of firearms, ammunition or concealed weapon by a convicted felon and armed burglary. His current release date is Oct. 17, 2022.

The Department’s Office of Inspector General is conducting an investigation and the Office of Intelligence is reviewing the incident to determine necessary action.
