Picking up on the red, white and blue

THOMASVILLE — In celebration of the Fourth of July, one local has drawn attention to his yard with his own artistic touch on the patriotic red, white and blue.

Steve Wooten, alongside his wife, said that he purchased the first scrap truck two years ago, painting it a bright red to signify the Christmas season. Continuing his seasonal celebration, Wooten eventually purchased a blue truck for the fall season.

According to Wooten, the trucks are purely artistic and have no internal parts. With the cheapest truck costing them $250, the couple pulls the decorative trucks into position using their golf cart.

“No motors, no transmissions,” he said. “It’s just something that I wanted to do for yard art.”

It was when he thought of Memorial Day that a thought struck him on how to round out his collection.

“And then thought struck us, why don’t get a white one and have a red, white and blue to celebrate Memorial Day and Fourth of July.” He said. “So my wife and I got to diggin’ and found another truck.”

Several in the community have reached out for photography opportunities with the decorations, with Wooten saying that he is honored and humbled by the attention.

“We’re honored, tickled, humbled, that people would reach out to us like they did.” Wooten said, “It’s a lot of work to do this, but when people respond it makes it worthwhile. We just love doing this, we enjoy seeing the smiles on people’s faces and enjoy making people happy.”

Wooten’s yard art can be seen at his home along U.S. Highway 84 E near the Thomas-Grady County line.
