TCCHS chooses next crop of student body leaders
THOMASVILLE —Thomas County Central High School has elected most of its class officers for the 2017-2018 school year.
Elections were held April 18 for the rising sophomore, junior and senior classes during News 4 You time in first period. This is the first year that ballots were cast electronically through Google Forms.
“The use of technology allowed for immediate tabulation of results and easy voting, even for students who were off campus attending college classes or on work leave,” sponsor Teresa Carver said.
Sophomore class officers are Langley Wooten (president), Zach Goff (vice president), Jasmine Gibson (secretary), Kendajah Cummings (treasurer), Keshira Daniels (inspirational leader), and David Piland (parliamentarian). Senators are MacKenzie Gilbreath, Auburne Mobley, Christin Connelly, Edjenee’ Gorbin, Brianna Cook, Michael Cress and Heaven-Leigh Ferguson.
Jasmine Gibson, 15, first joined student council as a freshman. She felt “it was a good way to get to know new people.”
Junior class officers are Caleb Moore (president), Samantha Castillo (vice president), Emily Owens (secretary), Zachary Sharpe (treasurer), Abigail Jense (inspirational leader), and Chelsey Lawler (parliamentarian). Senators are Reagan Huddleston, Ashton Barwick, Abigail Witcher and Dev Patel.
“I am very excited to serve my 11th grade class,” Chelsey Lawler, 16, said. “I feel like I will be able to work alongside some of my closest friends as well as make some new friends. The election has given me a newfound sense of confidence.”
Senior class officers are Huntley Rodgers (president), Riley Jones (vice president), Sydney Sanders (secretary), Kennedy Ward (treasurer), Jharre Bush (inspirational leader), and Georgia Smith (parliamentarian). Senators are Parker Dixon, Katie Weaver and Natalie Wyatt.
“I wanted to be on student council because I love how involved student council is in events around town,” Sydney Sanders, 17, said. “I went for class secretary because it was a spot that seemed like a good fit for me…. As class secretary, I want to encourage and help other students in our school to become more involved and be the best they can be.”
Throughout the year, student council will meet every other Wednesday during club time to discuss various events and improvement possibilities throughout the school. Council members work to improve their school and allow more opportunities for students to get involved in school activities.
“Meetings vary, but during every meeting students work on something involving the school, have an opportunity to express concerns, or bring up ideas,” Carver said. “Often members receive information and discuss community service opportunities such as helping with Shop With a Yellow Jacket, the special needs dance, eighth grade tours, Christmas parade float, etc. Junior and seniors are also involved with homecoming, prom, baccalaureate, graduation, and other activities that relate specifically to their grade.”
Elections for freshman class officers will be held this fall after the new school year begins.
