More of the same, weather-wise

VALDOSTA — South Georgia can expect the traditional pattern of mid-summer late afternoon thunderstorms through the week, though later in the week seems wetter than early on, forecasters said.

Storm chances range from 20-30 percent Monday through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service’s Valdosta forecast.

A weak cold front moving in from the north Tuesday through Wednesday will boost rain chances those days, said Ryan Adamson, a meteorologist with the private forecasting firm AccuWeather.

The front will bring drier air behind it, reducing rain chances for a few days afterward, said Wright Dobbs, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office.

Rain chances pick up again toward the weekend, with Friday and Saturday possibly being the wettest days of the week with storm chances about 60 percent, Adamson said. He said average rain for the week would only be about one-half to three-quarters of an inch of rain, except under isolated storms which could dump up to an inch.

High temperatures weeklong are expected to hover around 91 degrees, which Adamsom said is the average high for Valdosta for this time of year. Overnight lows are expected to be in the low 70s, according to the weather service’s forecast.

Neither forecaster expected widespread severe weather, though both said isolated wind gusts are possible.
