Minnesota man accused of illegal voting while on probation

MANKATO, Minn.  — A local man on felony probation has been charged with voter fraud in Minnesota’s presidential primary election last month.

A Blue Earth County election official notified Mankato police Roger Ramone Wesley, 34, registered to vote at a polling location in Mankato on March 3.

Wesley is on probation for a 2018 felony threats conviction. Minnesotans are not allowed to vote while serving probation or any other part of a sentence for a felony.

Wesley acknowledged to authorities he voted, claiming his probation had been discharged. But police said a check with Wesley’s probation officer disclosed that was not the case.

Wesley was charged with felony counts of registering to vote and voting while ineligible.

President Trump has often mentioned voter fraud as a reason for enacting voter ID laws, but election officials claim there have been few cases of voter fraud in local, state and national elections.

Thirty-two states have voter ID laws. Minnesota is not one of them.
