UDC observes birthdays and Georgia Day
The meeting for February is a busy one for the John B. Gordon Chapter 383 United Daughters of the Confederacy. It includes the observance of honoring the birthdays of Sidney Lanier, Pvt. CSA, Georgia poet and writer; Gen. John B. Gordon, CSA; Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, CSA ; and Alexander H. Stephens, vice-president, CSA. The UDC chapter also celebrates Georgia Day on Feb. 12.
Chapter Historian Dianne Ponder presented an informative program concerning “Helpful Hints on Preparing Reports Beneficial to Reflections of the War Between the States.” She shared her own historian reports from the past and gave several suggestions on how to prepare a good presentation for reports that will be sent to the Georgia Division UDC competition for awards.
Georgia Day commemorates the founding of Georgia. On Feb, 12, 1733 James Oglethorpe landed the first settlers from the ship Anne and founded Savannah.
Chapter President Mary Margaret Quiggle shared with the members several topics of information explaining how the chapter is supporting Georgia Day in this community. Children books have been presented to several schools that are about Georgia history. Public displays about Georgia history and products grown such as cotton, peanuts and pecans are in the Roddenbery Memorial Library in Cairo. This display also includes the Georgia state flag, Georgia symbols and places to visit in Georgia.
Quiggle presented each member with a Georgia Day lapel pin to wear. The lapel pin included the words: “Georgia Day, February 12.” The pin also included a picture of the current Georgia flag.
Reprintable Georgia Day booklets have been distributed to schools to use to help share Georgia history. It is a fun little booklet that can be colored in. The booklet is furnished by the Georgia Division UDC. Everything in the booklet pertains to a collection of Georgia’s state symbols and information.
President Quiggle announced the UDC chapter will be receiving a Georgia state flag from Rep. Darlene Taylor. This flag will be used for Memorial Day observances and other special occasions by the chapter.
