After-school program offers another option for parents

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The R.D. Smith After School Program will have an open house for registration July 30 through Aug. 3 from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the R.D. Smith Youth Center.

The open house event is for parents who want to register their kids for the after school program as it is known to fill up quickly each year. As a special treat the first 60 children who sign up will receive extra homework help and a snack each day while they are in the program.

The R.D. Smith After School Program is a joint venture between the United Way of Colquitt County, the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Authority, Colquitt County Arts Center and The Moultrie-Colquitt Library. It’s a free after-school program that provides children with a place to grow socially and academically by giving them homework help and other activities to help stimulate their mind.

After school program supervisor LaShay James says that the program is something special and it can open doors for children to grow and learn more about the real world and themselves.

“Our partnerships within the city help us a lot when it comes to adding to different programs,” said James. “The Colquitt County Library brings someone in to do arts and crafts, and we also have the Arts Center Drumline where someone comes in and teaches the kids how to play drums. Those are a few of the activities we have to offer and we are in the process of adding more.”

As the 2018-2019 school year rapidly approaches, the R.D. Smith After School Program is one choice for parents who want to put their children in an after-school program.

“We care about our kids, and it’s our duty to help our kids become lifelong learners,” said James. “We also try to stress the importance of education because if you don’t have an education it’s a big chance that you won’t go too far.”
