Heavy rain leads to sewage spill in Ochlocknee

OCHLOCKNEE — Town of Ochlocknee discovered a sewage overflow Thursday from a manhole adjacent to Pine Creek, according to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

The overflow was caused by 7.5 inches of rain in the area, resulting in heavy inflow into the system. That inflow overwhelmed the Pine Street lift station’s pumping capacity.

The overflow stopped at 8:05 p.m. Thursday, for a duration of three hours and 20 minutes. The total amount of the spill was calculated to be 2,790 gallons. EPD was notified Thursday night and the Thomas County Health Department was notified Friday morning. Signs will be posted upstream and downstream of the spill location.

The lift station, manhole and Pine Creek were re-inspected Friday morning and there was no discharge from the manhole at the time. Lime was applied to the area between the manhole and Pine Creek.
