TIFTON — Disabled American Veterans Chapter 38 hasn’t forgotten the meaning of Memorial Day.
Chapter 38 of the DAV will be leading Memorial Day Observance Program Monday at the Tifton Municipal Courtroom.
The doors open at 10 a.m. with the ceremony set to start at 10:30 a.m.
Don Koehler, executive director for the Georgia Peanut Commission, will be the key note speaker for the meeting.
The Tift County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard will present the colors.
After the ceremony, a motorcade will proceed to Oakridge Cemetery for the laying of the wreath honoring deceased veterans.
Memorial Day got its start in 1868.
Originally, it was known as Decoration Day and was set aside as a day to decorate the graves of people who died in the Civil War.
In the 20th century, the name Memorial Day began to be used and the meaning of the day was expanded to honor all those who died in US wars.
The day is held on the last Monday of May.
