Suspect still jailed in sexual assault case

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A 25-year-old Milledgeville man remains jailed in connection with a bizarre crime spree last week that ended with the suspect reportedly sexually assaulting a female clerk at a downtown convenience store, local authorities say.

Montrell D. Johnson, of 2412 A Brantley Way, was taken into custody a short time after the clerk was attacked and subsequently charged with a number of crimes, as well as traffic offenses, associated with two wrecks that happened after he stole a pickup truck last Wednesday afternoon.

The case was investigated by officers and detectives with the Milledgeville Police Department and has now officially been concluded, according to Police Chief Dray Swicord.

“There were three separate incidents in this case,” Swicord said, noting there was a wreck at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and North Columbia Street, and a wreck at East Hancock Street and North Jefferson Street. “The third incident is when he (suspect) went into the Golden Pantry and assaulted people.”

Swicord told The Union-Recorder in a telephone interview Monday afternoon that Johnson ran into the store and committed crimes, including a sexual assault on a female clerk, following the second wreck.

“There were some witnesses in the store at the time of these crimes,” Swicord said, pointing out that he would not get into specific details since a sexual assault was involved in the third incident.

Swicord explained that Johnson had to be physically restrained in order to take him into custody, but that the suspect was not injured to his knowledge.

After his arrest Johnson was taken to Navicent Health Baldwin hospital in Milledgeville where he spent the night undergoing a mental evaluation before he was discharged Thursday and taken to the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center and jailed.

Johnson was charged with felony aggravated sodomy, felony aggravated battery, two counts of misdemeanor battery, criminal attempt to commit a crime, and two counts of reckless driving.

Also, the suspect was charged with felony theft by taking of a motor vehicle, failure to obey a traffic control device, driving with a suspended license, criminal trespass, two counts of failure to provide assistance, and terroristic threats and acts, jail records show.

Before the wrecks and crimes at the Golden Pantry store, located at 204 E. Hancock St., Johnson reportedly stole a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck from The Milledgeville Manor Apartments, according to an incident report filed at the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the suspect caused both wrecks.

The first collision happened about 1:19 p.m. and involved three vehicles, according to a wreck report investigated and filed by Milledgeville Police Officer Donnie Roland.

It resulted in two injuries.

It occurred at the intersection of West Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and North Columbia Street.

The wreck involved the stolen pickup truck that Johnson was driving, as well as a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, Roland said in his report. The car was driven by Betty S. Thompson, of Haddock.

The third vehicle involved in the collision was a 2013 Jeep Wrangler driven by David W. Miller, of Sandersville.

The injured victims were treated at the scene by firefighters/first responders with Milledgeville Fire Department and personnel with Grady Emergency Medical Services.

The second wreck happened within just a few minutes of the first one, according to police.

The second wreck involved the stolen truck that Johnson was driving, as well as a 2013 Nissan Maxima driven by Deborah B. Wilkinson, of Milledgeville.

That wreck happened about 1:28 p.m.

Johnson reportedly ran a red light at the intersection of East Hancock Street and North Jefferson Street and collided into the driver’s door of Wilkinson’s car.

The collision caused the car to be pushed into the parking lot of the Golden Pantry store, near the gas pumps, Roland said in his report.

Wilkinson, who was trapped inside her car, was later freed by firefighters who used specialized tools to cut her out.

The injured victims of both wrecks were taken by ambulances to the emergency room of Navicent Health Baldwin hospital where they were treated.
