Governor Scott honors service veterans in Live Oak
LIVE OAK — Governor Rick Scott visited Live Oak on Monday to honor service veterans at a ceremony held at the Louis C. Wadsworth Armory.
Around 300 veterans filled the room for the Governor’s Veterans Service Award ceremony that began at 2 p.m.
Before handing out service medals, Scott, a U.S. Navy veteran, gave a speech to the crowd — speaking about the honor of being with so many brave men and women.
Four veterans were honored individually, including Sergeant Major Rob Sweat, who has been awarded two bronze star medals for his service. Robert Dutton, a World War II veteran, was honored individually as well as Sergeant First Class Thomas Graff and Staff Sergeant John E. Jackson.
Steve Murray, communications director for the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, said Scott has been hosting ceremonies on a monthly basis since August 2013 to recognize service veterans. Murray said more than 10,400 service awards medals have been handed distributed.
Army veteran John Black said he was excited to be at the ceremony and see a lot of former friends. Black, a 1960 Suwannee High graduate, comes from a military background. His father and brother were also in the Army. His son is a marine and his son-in-law is in the Navy.
