Tribute artist’s variety show to benefit Christian academy

DALTON, Ga. — Whether he’s performing as Jason Aldean, Bobby Darin, Bruno Mars, Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson, tribute artist Matt Cordell said there’s “a lot of moving and toe tapping going on.”

Cordell, 45, is bringing the Matt Cordell Variety Show to the Wink Theatre at 115 W. Crawford St. on Friday at 7 p.m. to benefit Faith Christian Academy, a private school in Chatsworth. Tickets are $15 in advance and are available by calling Pat Hooker at (706) 695-4033, or $20 at the door.

“We try to keep the tuition at our school low enough that anyone who wants to send their child to a private, Christian school can afford it,” Hooker said. “To be able to do that we try to keep some sort of fundraisers going to supplement the students’ tuition.”

Hooker said there are 20 students enrolled at the school in grades from kindergarten to 12th. Tuition is between $3,000 to $4,000 a year.

She said the school appeals to children who believe they don’t fit in at public schools and parents who want a Christian education for their children.

“We don’t just teach the Bible, we also teach academic classes just like a public school does,” she said. “Our students have to meet the same criteria as public school. They are just taught by Christian teachers in a Christian setting.”

Cordell, whose wife Tashia is a Chatsworth native, said he is happy to help the school. The couple now live in Sevierville, Tenn.

“I’ve been a tribute artist for the past 25 years,” Cordell, a Fort Oglethorpe native, said. “On Friday we’re doing an ultimate variety show, everything from country to pop.”

Cordell said those in attendance can expect “a lot of high energy.”

“The energy level is going to be through the roof,” he said. “All the music is upbeat.”

Cordell said he’ll have a few featured acts like his wife Tashia, mother Priscilla and bass player Jimmy Fulbright.

“This is the second time we’ve done this show at a venue,” he said. “The first time we sold out and people went crazy.”

Cordell has been singing professionally since the age of 18.

“I’ve had a pretty successful career, especially in Pigeon Forge (Tenn.),” he said.

Cordell said Elvis Presley is his number one musical inspiration followed by James Brown and Michael Jackson.

Hooker said she’s looking forward to seeing Cordell perform again.

“We’re real excited and appreciate Matt so much for doing this,” she said. “I’ve been to his benefit shows before and after three hours I left and he was still going strong. He puts it all on the table.”
