Sure-handed Bateman, Terry score in college action

TIFTON — Major college football made its debut last week and, with it, a number of area athletes made their marks on fields across the nation.

Highly noted was Rashod Bateman, who caught five passes for Minnesota against South Dakota State last Thursday for 132 yards and a touchdown. The scoring pass was a one-handed grab on the sideline that made worldwide highlight reels. Minnesota is at Fresno State Saturday.

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Patrick Felton split time at quarterback with Jack Mangel against Southwest Mississippi Community College. Felton completed seven of 13 passes for 70 yards. He also ran for five yards. Northwest Mississippi plays at Copiah-Lincoln Thursday.

Jameson Turner recorded four tackles for Gardner-Webb in a loss to Charlotte. The Bulldogs will be at East Carolina at 6 p.m. Saturday, a game scheduled for ESPN3.

Colorado’s Austin Williams won a 52-31 battle against Colorado State Saturday. His former offensive line teammate, Ches Jackson, suits up for Colorado State, but did not participate in the game.

Andrew Johnson participated in his first game for the Oregon Ducks after redshirting, but the former Blue Devil did not record any stats in the loss to Auburn. Oregon hosts Nevada Saturday.

Redshirt senior Jack Raines had seven tackles — 1.5 for losses — for Mercer in its 49-27 win over Western Carolina. Raines played his high school ball at Tiftarea.

Reinhardt University has J.T. Graydon for his junior season on its roster for 2019. Graydon sacked quarterbacks from Webber International (Fla.) twice and had five tackles overall.

Tajhea Chambers, still toiling at Arkansas State, had eight tackles — one for a loss — against Southern Methodist.

Former Blue Devils defender Montreal Henry will be back in the Peach State this weekend as his Northeast Oklahoma squad plays at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville. Game time is 6 p.m. GMC’s roster includes former Irwin County defensive lineman Marlon Jackson. Jackson has three tackles for the season.

James Graham (formerly of Fitzgerald) did not start for Georgia Tech at Clemson, but in relief of Tobias Oliver completed four of seven passes for 72 yards. He rushed for 15.

Georgia Southern picked up J.D. King (Fitzgerald) in a transfer move. King had 23 yards rushing against LSU.

At Florida State, Ontaria Wilson (Turner County) caught three passes for 26 yards against Boise State. Tamorrion Terry (also from Turner) led the squad with 99 yards on four catches, one being a touchdown.

Smaller colleges, including Valdosta State and West Georgia, jump into action this week.
