Dalton man facing aggravated child molestation charge

DALTON, Ga. — A Dalton man is facing a charge of aggravated child molestation after his mother turned a letter from his alleged victim over to the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Markel Jamal Freeman, 19, of 222 Cedar Ridge Road in Dalton, was charged Thursday by the sheriff’s office.

According to an incident report, on Dec. 14, a deputy met with Freeman and his mother in the lobby of the Whitfield County jail. The mother told the deputy that her sister-in-law gave her the letter, which was written by a 13-year-old relative. The letter “basically stated that Markel has been touching her and doing sexual things to” the relative.

Freeman had posted a $25,000 bond but had not been released from the jail Tuesday afternoon.
