Pebble Hill Plantation’s holiday finery

THOMASVILLE — Christmas is in the air at Pebble Hill as the plantation dons its holiday finery. The grounds and main house are decorated for the season.

The main house is filled with seven Christmas trees, each with a different theme. One of the favorites is the tree in the Morning Room, which features the family’s antique ornaments that date to the late 1800s. At the base of that tree are antique toys from the early 1900s. Another popular tree is the Woodland Tree, which features ornaments made from items about the grounds. There also is a tree filled with horse show ribbons and one that features hand-painted Alice in Wonderland ornaments.

Also on display is a crèche that belonged to Pebble Hill’s last owner, Elisabeth Ireland Poe. The set was donated back to Pebble Hill in 2003 by Poe’s great-niece, Margo Humphrey Bindhardt.

New this year in the main house is the Christmas Presents exhibition, which focuses on the exchanging of gifts among the family, friends and employees. The Hanna family kept meticulous records related to all aspects of Christmases at Pebble Hill. Not only did they keep lists of gifts sent and received, they put together scrapbooks of the Christmas cards received each year. Lloyd Hadley, the family’s chauffeur, dressed as Santa Claus and distributed the family’s gifts to the employees. His costume is on display. These and many other archival items are included in the exhibition.

Bring guests and enjoy a seasonal tour of the plantation. The holiday decorations will be in place through the month of December.

Extended main house tour hours are being offered Thursday, Dec. 15, through Saturday, Dec. 17. On these days, the last main house tour will begin at 6 p.m. Normal operating hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The last tour of the main house regularly begins at 3:45 p.m.

The property will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
