Mitchell averages double-double, named GSC Player of the Week

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Valdosta State forward Madi Mitchell was named Gulf South Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the league office Tuesday.

Mitchell scored 31 points on the week for an average of 15.5 points per game during VSU’s GSC split last week in Alabama. Her offensive effort led to a double-double average on the week, which included 22 rebounds (11 per game) in two games played. The junior hit 10 of her 20 shots from the field, 10-of-13 from the free-throw line and she added one 3-pointer and two assists.

On the season, Mitchell is averaging 16.3 points per game and 8.3 rebounds with a .510 field-goal percentage. She averages 35.8 minutes per game and has appeared in 26 games.

The junior from Warwick is fourth in the conference in scoring and second in field-goal percentage. She is eighth in rebounding and fifth in free-throw percentage. Mitchell ranks third in the conference in minutes played.

Before Saturday’s 70-52 loss against North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, the Blazers won seven in a row. The successful stretch began with a home win against West Georgia followed by three consecutive road victories against West Alabama, Mississippi College and Delta State. VSU returned to The Complex for wins against Union and Christian Brothers before defeating Alabama-Huntsville in Huntsville, Alabama.

VSU sits tied with Lee for the No. 2 spot in the GSC with a 14-6 conference record and has clinched a berth into the GSC tournament. The Blazers are 17-9 overall and boast a 10-3 home record. West Florida (21-5, 16-4 GSC) holds down the No. 1 spot in the standings.

The VSU women return to action Thursday at 6 p.m. with another important GSC matchup against the Shorter Hawks at The Complex.
