County tags $100M for school projects

VALDOSTA — More than $100 million in facility-enhancement projects are in the works for Lowndes County Schools.

The biggest ticket item is the Lowndes High School project at $59.6 million, which is one of three projects in progress.

Others include ABM Building Solutions upgrades to various campuses for $10.4 million and the LHS field house re-roofing for $69,640.

However, there are plenty of projects to come, said Jeff Hill of Lowndes County Schools facilities management department at the Tuesday evening Lowndes County Board of Education meeting.

“Our wish list is much bigger than our completed projects to date,” Hill said. “We’re looking forward to moving on with these projects.”

This includes a new Lowndes Middle School that will cost $26.6 million using state and local funding. Also in the works is a new Lake Park Elementary School costing $14 million and a new Clyattville Elementary School at $18.2 million using both state and local funding.

Seven schools are going to require renovations, which will cost the system anywhere from $2.6 million to $14.3 million.

Start dates for the projects have not been scheduled except for the Dewar Elementary School student drop-off changes that will cost $350,000 and HMS parking and tennis court changes that will cost $200,000. Both projects will start in June.

All of the projects, according to Hill, will require $40.7 million in state funds and $134.2 million in local funds for a total of $174.9 million.
