Track has last quad meet
TIFTON — Tift County High competed in its final home quad meet of the year Wednesday, taking on Cook, Crisp County and Worth County in track and field.
Though not at full strength, it was a productive afternoon for Tift County athletes.
Dasia Flanders and Shadiamond McIntyre were 1-2 in the 200-meter dash. Flanders’ time was 26.97 seconds. Other 1-2 finishes came from Karoline Ponder and Josie Bullington in the 800 and Emily Golden and Alexis Tucker in the 3,200. Ponder won in 3:00, Golden in 12:24.
Divinity Mitchell won the 100 hurdles in 19.91 seconds, two seconds ahead of her nearest competitors. Mike Jones won the 110 hurdles in 15.46 seconds before finishing second to teammate Danny Hill in the 300 hurdles. Hill’s winning time was 42.56 seconds to Jones’ 42.75.
Tift’s Tyler Ajiero won the 100 meters for the boys in 10.91 second, only one-tenth of a second ahead of Jamal McMillian of Cook. He went on to win the 200 in 22.6 seconds, beating McMillian by only a slightly larger margin. The Lady Devils missed first place in the 100-meter dash, but took the next four spots. Ke’ara Chukes was second, followed by Kalliyah Barber, Kalliyah Wright and Amiaya Bryant.
J.D. Bengston was first in the 800. His time was 2:16.
McIntyre, Cali Conner, Chukes and Flanders combined to win the 4×100 relay in 52.39 seconds. Flanders, Keishonna Branner, Bryant and Barber later took the 4×400 relay in 4:40. The Blue Devils 4×400 relay team won their event in 3:42.
Conner won the high jump, clearing 5 feet. Alison Stone was second and Chukes was third. Dajhireana Ford won shot put with a distance of 27’10”, with Makayah Howard second at 24’08”.
Ronald Jackson and Azaria Smith battled one another in the high jump. Jackson won a jump-off at 6’2”. Both attempted 6’4” but came up short.
Javien Neloms won long jump at 21’11”. Shot put saw Antonio Howard edge Cade Anders, 46’5” to 45’3”. Braysan Doward took the discus at 131’.
Special recognition was given by coach Josh Allen to Stone for her performance in the 300 hurdles. Stone slipped and fell three-quarters of the way around the track. She immediately picked herself up and continued with the race, completing it in 53.77 seconds and missing first places by less than a half-second.
“She’s a competitor,” said Allen. Though sporting a big “cherry” bruise on her shoulder, Stone was able to laugh about the fall during the remainder of the meet.

Girls 200: Wright (4th) and Chukes (5th).
Girls 400: Branner (2nd).
Girls 1,600: Savannah Miller (2nd).
Girls 4×100 relay: Ka’Nyjia Henley, Bryant, Bre’Asia Allen and Barber (3rd).
Girls long jump: Keisha Jackson (3rd) and Allen (4th).
Girls triple jump: Jackson (2nd) and Allen (3rd).
Girls discus: Howard (2nd) and Ford (5th).
Boys 100: Quay Clines (5th).
Boys 200: Timothy Wright (5th).
Boys 400: J.D. Bengston (3rd).
Boys 800: Bernard Tindall (3rd).
Boys 1,600: Beau Bengston (2nd) and Steven Croft (5th).
Boys 3,200: Zach Brey (2nd).
Boys 300 hurdles: Zach Carter (5th).
Boys 4×100 relay: 2nd.
Boys triple jump: Deontae Overstreet (3rd).
Boys shot put: Tyre West (5th).
Boys discus: William Goodwin (3rd).
Because repairs are needed to the pole vault facilities, that event was not held.
Last week’s Westover track meet was cancelled because of weather concerns. Tift picked up an additional meet were are scheduled to be at the McEachern Invitational in Powder Springs Saturday. That will be their final meet until the Region 1-AAAAAAA competition Apr. 24 at Lowndes.
