Kappa Leaguers to hold interest meeting
The Thomasville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. will host an “Interest” meeting for young men ages 10-18 Thursday, September 7, at the Marguerite Williams Boys and Girls Club cafeteria area at 6 p.m.
Over the past 25-plus years the fraternity has sponsored a local Kappa League program, currently managed by Marvin Dawson. Dawson is the vice polemarch/Guide Right chairman and a recipient of the 2016 and 2017 Southeastern (Georgia and South Carolina) Province Guide Right Directors Awardee. In July, Dawson was recognized nationally at the 83rd Grand Chapter meeting held in Orlando, Florida and was awarded the Bert V. Wadkins Silver Award. The national award is given to the outstanding Guide Right Director-small chapter.
The Thomasville chapter is led by Polemarch/President Eddie Brown Sr.
“Mr. Dawson has done a wonderful job and reminds me of Mr. Ira Flowers, one of our former Guide Right chairman,” Brown said. “He has a genuine desire to work with our young Kappa Leaguers.”
Brown states that last school year the Thomasville chapter logged over 500 hours working with area kids.
According to chapter Polemarch Brown, Kappa League members are “Training for Leadership” in order to achieve their dreams. Regular meetings are held each month to give members an opportunity to socialize and learn how to participate in formal and business settings.
Kappa League members are involved in numerous community activities, such as Hands on Thomas County, Rose Bud Parade, Martin Luther King Run in Thomasville, and the Martin Luther King Parade in Cairo. They also make visits to two nursing homes, Camellia Garden of Life Care and Golden Living Center, where Kappa Leaguers play Bingo with residents. Kappa Leaguers attend Sunday worship services at various churches in the city each month as well.
The approach, according to Polemarch Brown, is to provide opportunities so that the Kappa Leaguers learn through hands-on experiences and exposure. Thomasville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi has a host of men who have a wealth of knowledge and experiences and are willing to share with Kappa Leaguers.
The goal is not for Kappa Leaguers to memorize answers to questions, but to apply the knowledge they have learned while being exposed to experiences such as those listed above. We continue striving to teach the Kappa Leaguers discipline, patience, leadership, and respect for themselves and others. In addition, the Kappa Leaguers are afforded opportunities that foster their education and career choices beyond high school by visiting numerous higher learning institutions.
