Fitzgerald to play in Saturday’s state semifinals

TIFTON — The Fitzgerald Lady Purple Hurricane will play in their first final four game Saturday. Fitzgerald travels to Milledgeville’s Georgia College and State University for a 6 p.m. game against Josey High of Augusta.

Saturday’s winner will advance to the Class AA state championship Wednesday to play either Model or Lucy Laney. The finals take place at the Macon Coliseum.

Fitzgerald defeated Rabun County in the quarterfinals Tuesday, 70-65, avenging a loss from 2017’s state tournament. Rabun eliminated the Lady ‘Canes in the quarterfinal round a year ago.

Kirstin Crook scored 28 to lead Fitzgerald, according to team stats on MaxPreps. Kyah Crook added 13 points and Keyara Boone scored 11. Sixteen of Kirstin Cook’s points came from the free throw line and the Lady ‘Canes made 26 of 36 attempts from the stripe.

Josey’s record is listed as 28-4. The Lady Eagles defeated Douglass in the quarterfinals, 57-39.

Until last season, Fitzgerald had never advanced as far as the quarterfinals. The program went without girls basketball from 1957-78. Fitzgerald was a junior varsity program in 1978-79 and dropped to that status again briefly in 1984-85.
