High school student arrested for having drugs on school grounds
CHATSWORTH, Ga. — A Murray County High School student was arrested at the school Monday morning after an assistant principal alerted the school’s resource officer of four students “smelling like marijuana.”
Emilio Romo, 18, of 73 Daffodil Lane in Chatsworth, was charged by the Chatsworth Police Department with possession of a schedule 2 drug, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, drugs not in the original container, possession of drug-related objects and possession of a controlled substance in or near a public school, which is a felony.
According to an incident report from Officer Jonathan Sosebee, Assistant Principal Chris Thornbury contacted him after four students arrived late to school and smelled of marijuana. Three of the students were identified as juveniles and their names were not included in the report.
Sosebee met with the three juveniles individually and, after noting in the report that he could smell marijuana on each of them, each of their backpacks was searched but no drugs were found.
Thornbury asked one of the juveniles how he got to school that morning and was told that Romo brought him to school. The juvenile admitted they smoked marijuana in the vehicle and before school.
Romo was then taken out of class and when his backpack was searched, Sosebee found five orange and white capsules that were later identified as prescribed amphetamine and dextroamphetamine extended release. When asked, Romo said he was not prescribed the capsules.
In response to a question, Romo admitted to Thornbury that there was a pipe in his car, which was on school grounds. A glass pipe was found with tar residue on the inside, and the pipe smelled like marijuana. Also inside the car, Thornbury found a plastic baggie with a “green leafy substance” inside that smelled like marijuana.
Romo was released from the Murray County jail on a $3,500 bond Tuesday afternoon.
The status of the three juveniles with the school system was unavailable. Messages left for Murray County Schools Director of Administration Mike Tuck were not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon, and attempts to reach Murray County High Principal Gina Linder were unsuccessful.
